Microsoft Dynamics 365 Advanced Filtering

Advanced filtering is one of the most powerful — yet often underutilised — tools in Microsoft D365. Advanced Filtering can turn hours of manual searching into seconds, giving you powerful, precise control over your data — if you know how to use it.

It allows you to build advanced queries across multiple tables and related data. With it, you can apply precise, multi-condition searches and gain far greater control over sorting and filtering than standard filters provide.

This feature is available in almost every form that contains a table and is easy to access directly from the Action Pane.

What You Can Do with Advanced Filtering
You can use advanced filtering to:
• Filter across related tables (e.g., filter sales orders by customer group)
• Use ranges, wildcards, or custom expressions
• Sort by one or more fields
• Build reusable views for complex scenarios
• And more

How the Advanced Filter Form Works
The advanced filter form uses the following columns to search, sort, and cross-reference:
• Table – The main data table of the current page
• Field – Select from current and related tables
• Criteria – Input filter conditions (e.g., date ranges, text, wildcards)
• Sorting – Add sort fields (ascending or descending)
• Joins – Add related tables via Add Table to access more fields

The Criteria column supports many syntaxes, including but not limited to:

Use Case Scenario

Here are a few simple yet powerful examples of how to use advanced filtering. Once you get familiar with the basics and learn some tips and tricks, you can master more complex scenarios.

Example 1: Add the Project Group table, cross-reference it with On-account Invoicing, and search by Customer Invoice.

Example 2: Use the search criteria below to identify budget overruns before the month-end close:
